Inpatient & outpatient group facilitation
In group therapy, the group, not the individual, is the focus of treatment: to be a successful group therapist is – to some extent – to be invisible.” — Alex Michaelides
Inpatient group facilitation involves guiding structured therapeutic sessions designed to support patients in stabilizing their mental health, developing coping skills, and fostering social connections in a secure environment. I facilitate groups using evidence-based approaches such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), psychoeducation, or mindfulness techniques. Groups provide a space for patients to share experiences, learn from one another, and practice healthy communication while addressing issues like emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and relapse prevention. Groups balance engagement and structure by fostering a safe and inclusive atmosphere, managing group dynamics, and redirecting discussions when necessary to maintain therapeutic effectiveness. By promoting peer support and skill-building, inpatient group facilitation plays a crucial role in a patient’s recovery journey, complementing individual therapy and psychiatric treatment.
